New Grad Onboarding

Important Dates

These dates are posted here in an effort to help you decide when to arrive in Seattle. New F-1 and J-1 visa holders can enter the U.S. up to 30 days in advance of the start date listed on their I-20 (typically the first day of instruction).

April 30

Onboarding Survey Due
Please complete the Onboarding Survey by April 30 to acquire a temporary advisor, office assignment, and respond to our admission statistics request.

Mid-August

Sign up to TA
The Autumn TA sign-up announcement will be sent to you directly. See TA pages for details.

September 1

Course Petitions Due
Please submit all of your graduate-level CSE course waiver requests by September 1st so that we have time to evaluate them before the start of the quarter. Late petitions allowed, but no guarantees that the evaluation will be ready in time!

September 2 (Monday)

Labor Day – National Holiday, UW Closed
The University and many other businesses are closed on this day. The advising office is closed.

September 16

Payroll Begins!
You will be placed on the payroll (RA/TA/fellowship).  First check will be Oct. 10 for pay period Sept 16-30.  Next check is Oct. 25 for pay period Oct 1-15. Graduate student health insurance (GAIP) coverage begins October 1.

September 18 (Wednesday)

Teaching@UW: Live Learning Event on Zoom

This 90-minute synchronous Zoom workshop features a panel of TAs, faculty members, and CTL colleagues sharing specific strategies and answering common TA questions. The workshop will be recorded and posted online for TAs who are unable to attend, do not yet have a UW NetID, or who do not begin their TA-ship until Winter or Spring quarters.

Registration for the program is typically available in mid-June. Check back on this page then for the registration link.

September 18-19 (Wednesday, Thursday)

Allen School New Grad Student Orientation (In-person, all day)DO NOT MISS THIS! YOU ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THIS EVENT!
Current grads organize the full two days of orientation–faculty pitch the quals courses they will be teaching during the year; initiation into the Allen School culture, general program and building information, class bonding activities, and fun, of course! Breakfast and lunch are provided on both days. For 2024: The orientation page 
will be updated with times, location, and schedule from the grad student organizers.

PIt Party & Welcome TGIF (3:30pm-6pm)
TGIF (Thank Goodness It’s Friday) is a weekly Allen School tradition that takes place in the Atrium at 4:30pm. Students, faculty, and advising come together to enjoy some drinks, snacks, and company. The Pit Party & Welcome TGIF is the first of the year and is a catered event! Students organize the remainder of the TGIFs, which usually involve an activity of some sort — ask your mentor about MasterChef: CSE Leftovers Edition!
